Types of SSD Benefits
The Social Security Administration (SSA) provides four different benefit programs for individuals with disabilities:

• Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) – Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI, are benefits that are paid to qualifying disabled individuals who have worked for a certain minimum amount of time over a certain period. In general, most applicants will have needed to have worked at least five out of the last 10 years. Younger applicants may have lower thresholds since they have shorter work histories.
• Supplemental Security Income (SSI) – Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, are benefits that are paid to disabled individuals who have lower levels of income and little or no assets, regardless of whether the individual has worked in the past.
• Disabled Widows and Widowers Benefits – Disabled widows and widowers are entitled to receive Social Security benefits based on their deceased spouse’s earnings record, starting at age 50, provided their disability started before or within seven years of their spouse’s death.
• Disabled Adult Child Benefits – A disabled adult child is entitled to receive benefits based on their parents’ earnings records, provided the child was disabled before age 22 and continues to remain disabled.
